Rules & Format
The Solid Open follows a slightly modified version of the IBJJF ruleset to ensure a safe, fair, and enjoyable experience for all competitors. Please review the adjustments below:
Tigers Kids Matches (Ages 4–12)
We allow a few additional submissions not typically permitted in standard IBJJF Kids tournaments:
- Omoplata
- Ezekiel Choke
- Head & Arm Choke
These techniques are permitted to give young athletes more opportunities to showcase their skills. Referees will monitor these matches closely to ensure safety at all times.
Adult & Masters No-Gi (Brown/Black Belt Divisions)
The following leg entanglements and submissions are permitted:
- Reaps
- Cross Ashi and its variants
- Heel Hook submissions
- Clover Leaf submissions
These techniques allow for more advanced competition in the higher-level No-Gi divisions while maintaining controlled oversight from referees.
General Rules for All Competitors
- Points System: We use the standard IBJJF scoring system
- Points awarded for guard passes, mounts, back control, takedowns, sweeps, and submission attempts
- Points awarded for guard passes, mounts, back control, takedowns, sweeps, and submission attempts
- No Advantages:
- Unlike the IBJJF, we do not award advantages
- Unlike the IBJJF, we do not award advantages
Matches will be decided only by points or submission, promoting a clear and decisive outcome
Our priority is safety, sportsmanship, and a positive experience for every competitor. Referees will maintain close oversight—especially in youth divisions—to ensure fair and respectful matches.
Spirit of the Event
The Solid Open is all about:
- Enjoying the experience: Compete in a supportive environment
- Kindness & camaraderie: Respect on and off the mats
- Having fun: Celebrate every effort—not just the win
Parents:
Please help us keep the atmosphere positive by cheering for all competitors and making every athlete feel encouraged and valued.
We can’t wait to see you there for a day full of smiles, growth, and great memories!
Coaches:
What We Expect From You: While our coaches are cornering the competitors and coaching them through the match, please allow for the coaches voice to be the main source of information. We know it is incredibly exciting to watch your kiddos compete, but ensuring that they can hear what the coach is telling them to do will yield a strong student/coach relationship.
Questions?
If you have any concerns or would like clarification on specific rules, feel free to reach out before tournament day. We’re happy to help!
